PRESS RELEASE: The Journal of Australian Ceramics reaches 60th anniversary

The Australian Ceramics Association is pleased to announce the diamond anniversary of its print magazine The Journal of Australian Ceramics (JAC). In 2022, to celebrate 60 years of continuous print publication, there will be three special issues published to pay homage to the past, present and future of the Australian studio ceramics community.

“Pottery in Australia was brought into existence because of a thirst for sharing experiences and knowledge, and potters seeking connection with others who shared their love of clay and the ceramic process,” says JAC editor Vicki Grima.

“JAC’s contributors have predominantly been artists first and foremost, with many enthusiastically taking on further responsibilities as part of their involvement with JAC and in turn as an extension of their art practice. Whether it be collaborator, contributor, curator, educator, mentor, pioneer, scientist, speaker, technician, traveller, volunteer or writer, Australia’s ceramic artists have embraced the opportunity to be part of the magazine and have been instrumental through these roles in the advancement of ceramic art in this country.”
Previously known as Pottery in Australia (PIA) the magazine was first published in May 1962. Over six decades JAC has had the privilege of Australia’s leading ceramicists gracing the covers and pages of the magazine.

This significant milestone is being celebrated by the Australian Design Centre who will launch a new ADC On Tour exhibition, presented in partnership with The Australian Ceramics Association, entitled SIXTY: The Journal of Australian Ceramics’ 60th Anniversary 1962–2022, to debut at the end of March.

Celebrations will continue at the Australian Ceramics Triennale – Australia’s landmark national ceramics conference. This years’ Australian Ceramics Triennale Apmere Mparntwe will be held in the red centre at the Araluen Cultural Precinct in Alice Springs from 19–23 July.

The first volume of the magazine contained just 26 pages and sold for 5 shillings. On 1 April, 2022 Volume 61 No 1 will be published (selling for $20) and will feature 160 glossy pages of inspiring profiles, exhibitions and commentaries.
