SYDNEY: The Christmas season has arrived, along with a new strain of COVID-19. For Australians across the country, this is an exciting time where families come together and celebrate, but the Omicron variant is cause for precaution this summer.

A new app called StayingSafe is making that process a lot easier, by offering Aussies the ability to confirm that people attending their Christmas lunches have recently tested negative for COVID-19.

StayingSafe allows you to create an event and send invites to attendees, who are prompted to undergo a rapid antigen test within a specific time frame before the event, which they upload onto the app confirming their COVID-19 negative status. If they do not complete the test, you are able to refuse their attendance, and if their test is positive then they must report to their local PCR testing location immediately for a diagnostic test.

Alan Higgins, CEO of Rapid Test & Track who have built the StayingSafe app, said the idea came from friends and colleagues discussing their concerns regarding the fear associated with having elderly, immunocompromised, or newborn family members and friends over during the upcoming Christmas period.

“It’s a tough thing to deal with. Christmas is the best time of the year to catch up with loved ones especially after the extended lockdowns that we’ve all gone through this year. There is a lot of added stress to a time that is very social with gift-giving, backyard cricket, sharing meals, the things that pose a lot of risk to COVID-19 transmission.

“It seems like we are going to continue seeing these strains slip through the cracks as Omicron and Delta have done, and it’s important that we have a system in place to keep all our loved ones safe. StayingSafe gives us the tools to help alleviate the stress and doubt that comes with hosting these events.”
