VIP Opening Reception – Thursday, 22nd April, 6.00pm – 8.00pm

TRENNA AUSTIN Gallery is pleased to announce the launch and VIP opening night of Trenna Austin’s first Gallery ownership, located in the heart of Mosman, Sydney. The exhibition of new works by Austin are a collection of paintings produced over the last year. This will be the artist’s first large-scale solo show in Sydney, Australia. In this group of paintings, titled ’EQUUS’- Pictorial Beginnings to Abstracted endings, will show contemporary paintings that involve lots of looking to grasp the artist’s talented skills in balancing on the edge of figurative and abstraction. Inspired by the Australian Lighthorse Brigade, horses and Lascaux cave art, Austin’s canvas becomes a “battlefield” full of swirly brushstrokes, blotches and dabs that flicker and flow expressing ‘movement’. Artist Trenna Austin described the series in the following statement ‘Painting the unseen is like snorkelling in the dark’. However, I am to reveal a sense of visual urgency and vitality that involves the viewer to sense the negotiation, engagement and tension without the cacophony and violence that characterised Abstract Expressionism and War. As a keen equestrian eventer in Dressage, Showjumping and Cross-country I would often research “horses in art’ during my academic studies. This inspired my knowledge of Australia history but in particular the official 1933 war paintings of the Australian Light Horse Brigade in WW1.

Trenna Austin is South Australian known and was born in Murray Bridge in 1969. Austin has worked in National Corporate Executive roles and as a Professional Catwalk Model. She moved to Sydney in 2000 where she currently lives and works. This is her first solo exhibition in Sydney since the Hunter Valley in 2017. Austin has sold her work to private collections in the United Kingdom and exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Adelaide, Sydney and Australia-wide. Austin won the John McCaughley Prize for ‘Best Painting’ at the National Art School, Sydney, Australia in 2020. She was also selected for the prestigious Harvey Galleries National Art School Graduate Exhibition Award 2020 for ‘Outstanding’ work which was showcased in February 2021 at Harvey Galleries, Mosman, NSW. Austin has been trained at the National Art School and holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (Distinction) and Advanced Diploma in Advertising and Graphic Design.
A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition
