PRESS RELEASE: URBAN CORE REACHES GENDER PARITY
Australian construction company is now fifty per cent female
In a landmark likely to be an Australian first, Urban Core construction company has welcomed 2024 by reaching a long-standing goal. More than half its staff are female, a ratio that’s still a rarity worldwide, in what continues to be a stubbornly male-dominated industry.
Founded by entrepreneur Dominique Gill at her kitchen table, Urban Core was partly born out of frustration at limited opportunities and rigid work practices. Female recruitment was a key goal from the beginning, with an initial target of 40 per cent women.
“A target was never about box checking for me,” Gill says. “It was always on the lookout for the best candidates, and sometimes that meant going out and finding them first”. Urban Core’s innovative hiring processes targeted fresh graduates, women in other industries, and executive staff hitting the glass ceiling elsewhere. Those who joined were often overlooked, underappreciated, or seeking a challenge in a different industry.
Not only has the target beaten expectations, so has the pay off. In the most challenging business environment for construction in living memory, Urban Core has gone from strength to strength. A former AFR Fast Starter company, it now has hundreds of millions of dollars worth of projects on its books, and both the company and Gill personally have won a slew of awards along with these major contracts.
“The inside of our offices looks like the world outside it,” Gill says. “That shouldn’t be groundbreaking any more. Ultimately, our builds are going to be used by all kinds of people, and our staff should understand where they’re coming from.”
