PRESS RELEASE: Victorian Army Reserve member dies suddenly: $60K raised in five days

Corporal Chris “Lammy” Lam passed away last week after developing a serious infection in his arm less than a week before. He leaves behind his wife and two young children aged three and one. In five days, a friend has raised over $60,000 via online fundraising to support the family going forward.
Lammy, as he is known to many friends, suddenly found himself with a significant infection on the 22 July. Over the next few days, as he underwent emergency surgeries, his health deteriorated rapidly. Eventually he was placed on life support in an induced coma. He died in the early hours of 28 July.
Geoffery Rossiter then began a mycause fundraising page later that day “as part of our effort to support Lammy’s young family going forward”. The page has already raised over $60,000.
The infection is believed to have started from an insect bite. Bacteria from the bite made its way into his system, where he developed severe sepsis. He was placed in a medically-induced coma and multiple emergency surgeries were performed to attempt to alleviate the compartment syndrome in all of his extremities.
Corporal Lam was a member of Bravo Company, 5th/6th Army Reserve Infantry Battalion, Royal Victorian Regiment. He was also well loved among the community. The inundation of donations and sharing of the news on social media have been accompanied by an outpouring of messages of grief, heartbreak, and support for his young family.
His family, friends, colleagues, and “Army family” all remember a kind and “genuine” person. Messages on the mycause fundraising page include: “Lammy was much loved and respected among all of us that had the privilege to work with him. We will all miss him.”
“Chris was the best of us. It takes about 5 seconds to see how much of a genuine decent person Chris was. Always going out of his way to make you feel valued and appreciated.”
“…his genuineness and kindness shined through revealing the good bloke that he was. May he rest easy.”
“Lammy, there are so many things I wish I could say to you. I saw you not long ago and can’t believe that will now be the last time 😭 Our deepest condolences go to you Erin and your beautiful children. We promise that Chris will never be forgotten and we will be here for you.”
