Do you remember the clink of milk bottles on the doorstep, peeling back the lid on a fresh bottle of milk and being the first to experience the creamy goodness inside? Big River Milk do. Yet somehow the magic of real milk in real glass has mostly been forgotten, along with the planet, as the milk industry produced billions of disposable plastic bottles.
Big River Milk are starting a movement in right the wrong, ditch the plastic and return milk to glass, delivered fresh to the door every day in re-washable and refillable glass bottles.
“We were really hit by the Australian ABC show ‘War on Waste’. It made us start to think about plastic in the supply chain and how can we get rid of it” said Peter Watt of Big River Milk. “We use around 500,000 bottles a year, and we’re only a small producer. It’s mind boggling to think how much plastic goes into the system.”
Big River Milk have quickly worked out that it isn’t going to be easy, and it’s not going to be cheap. “The move away from plastic is worthwhile, but we really didn’t fathom just how many changes that we would have to make to our systems. From the bottle cleaning machines, right through to upgrading the weight rating of the trucks that deliver our milk – it’s all got to change!”
While this is returning to old-school milk delivery, Big River are turning to modern day activism to help achieve their goal. “We worked out that we need a little over $400,000 to fund the change-over. We have access to about half of that, for the rest we are hoping to pre-sell milk home delivery subscriptions on our website and we are also turning to crowdfunding site Indiegogo to get like-minded people to help us raise the funds. In return we’ve come up with a series of packages from t-shirts right through to naming rights for our cows,” Peter says, “It’s just our way of giving people that we can’t supply our milk too to join our movement back to old fashioned milk, in glass, the way it should be”.
It has only been three days, but the engagement Big River Milk have been getting through their social media channels has been phenomenal. “It’s obviously struck a nerve,” exclaims Peter; we are getting hundreds of supportive comments in our posts, it looks like glass is something people feel strongly about.’’
The next step is getting people to help fund the process to eradicate plastic from the supply chain for Big River Milk. Our dairy began as five small dairy plots on Lawrence Road that joined together to build a boutique pasteurisation and bottling plant. Our ambition was to return milk to being real milk just the way it should be. A new lobby group comprising scientists, farmers, consumers, small business and big business is urging both sides of Australian politics to put aside party interests and global agendas to focus on what’s best for Australian business, workers, consumers and the environment.

The Saltbush Club calls for Australia to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and to cease financing or supporting the international bodies promoting it.

It challenges the whole idea of a consensus on man-made global warming.

Jerry Ellis, retired chairman of BHP, and Founding Chairman of the Saltbush Club says:

“It is clear that Australia’s push to meet the Paris carbon dioxide emission targets is leading to higher electricity prices and unreliable supply. We have lost the balance between working for environmental outcomes and working for economic outcomes. These things need to be balanced, and this balance is missing with the Paris Agreement. The world would be a better place with strong economies generating money to spend on poverty, health, infrastructure and the environment.”

Defence lawyer to release tell-all book detailing his life in criminal law


A highly respected criminal defence lawyer is to reveal all about his 36 years working in the criminal justice system in a tell-all book set to be released in Australia on the 20th November 2018.

Split Second is written by Michael Kuzilny, a member of the Law Institute of the Criminal Law section, who formerly worked as an officer with Victoria and Queensland police.

The book details real-life events that Kuzilny has witnessed during his storied career as a barrister, including juicy tales of police corruption.

It is the latest novel to be released by Kuzilny, who is a media personality and has written 12 books on a variety of topics, including true crime, personal development and meditation.

Ballarat-based entrepreneur Ellen Burns, 29, is leading the way to a better snack food industry. Not only are her snacks healthy and allergy-friendly, but she recently became the first Victorian business owner to use 100% Certified home compostable packaging on her energy bars. This means that when the snack is finished the wrapper can be thrown in the compost or buried in the garden, safely degrading in a matter of weeks. The wrappers are made from sustainable plant fibres and promise to be the next big thing in the war on waste. In an industry that relies on packaging to keep food fresh and portable, Ellen wants to show people that convenience foods don’t have to be inconvenient for the planet.

Not happy with following the status quo, Ellen is on a mission to make her business completely plastic free. “Reducing waste has always been very important to me, but a waste-free lifestyle didn’t seem to match up with being a business owner.” Since starting the business in 2015, Ellen has grown increasingly uncomfortable with the waste that she was creating. “Even though my packaging was recyclable, it was still confronting to receive the boxes of plastic pouches, knowing that I was responsible for putting that out into the world. We’ve been shown recently how unreliable recycling really is.” Ellen started searching for alternatives over a year ago, but completely home compostable wrappers have only recently become available. “After a lot of searching, I managed to find PA Packaging, who are currently the only supplier of this packaging in the whole country. The demand just hasn’t been there and the technology has been catching up. We’re living in a time where people are finally starting to really think about their impact on the planet.”

The home compostable packaging is plant-based and made from cellulose derived from sources like Eucalyptus and sugar cane. All of the ingredients are ethically sourced and any trees that are cut down are replaced by at least one new tree, if not more. Even the adhesive is certified home compostable, which sets it apart from most other packaging on the market. Ellen explains, “Biodegradable packaging can be an ethical minefield. Biodegradable plastics actually break down to microplastic, making them even worse than standard plastic. Compostable packaging can only be processed by industrial facilities, which is not a system we’re really set up for yet. With home compostable packaging, we can take responsibility at a personal level and prevent it from ever entering the waste stream.” Ellen’s new wrappers can be put into home compost bins or buried in the ground, certified to safely degrade in a maximum of 26 weeks. Ellen’s home tests has shown no sign of them after as little as 13. They have also been tested and confirmed to break down safely in sea water, which means that if they somehow end up in the waterways they won’t be choking any marine life or clogging up the ocean. With over 100 million marine animals estimated to be killed by plastic debris each year, we need to be doing all we can to cut down on our plastic waste.

Despite the increased knowledge around waste and how it is affecting our planet, consumers are still torn between their desire for ethics and need for convenience. “The tide is changing on how people view plastic, and demand is increasing for ethical products, but people don’t want to sacrifice convenience,” Ellen explains. “We’ve seen the backlash from the plastic bag ban. There are things that people don’t want to give up. We live busy, mobile lives, and packaging is necessary. I want to prove that you don’t have to compromise, you can have ethical convenience.” Ellen hopes that other businesses will follow suit and that we could soon have a world free from single-use plastic. “Politicians have floated the idea of a complete ban on single-use plastics and people tend to panic. Packaging is vital; not only in the food industry but in other fields like medicine and science. It’s really important that we have viable plant-based replacements. The technology is there now. We finally have an alternative.” Living plastic free may still be a challenge, but business owners like Ellen are working to make living ethically a little easier.

14 November 2018: In the face of continuing government failure to act on climate change, a social enterprise is paving the way for communities across Australia to go it alone in terms of electricity supply.

Set up to disrupt the energy market and do it differently, Enova Community Energy is already facilitating communities to take control of their own energy solutions – building a decentralised energy system where households and businesses can produce and share their own renewable energy and lower costs.

As a retailer, Enova is the piece of the energy industry puzzle that allows the sharing and trading of electricity to take place, provides the systems, and covers off the risks.

With Australia dominated by three big retailers, Enova regularly lobbies the government to help ensure survival of smaller retailers. It has also consistently offered one of the best feed-in tariffs for solar, which forced some of the big energy companies to improve their offers.

Australian men are embracing vasectomies according to Medicare data analysed by Marie Stopes Australia for World Vasectomy Day.

Marie Stopes Australia conducted an audit of the available Medicare data on vasectomy from the last 20 years and found that more men are getting on board with the snip.

Marie Stopes Australia’s Lead Vasectomist, Dr Justin Low, said the trend was genuinely uplifting, given the procedure is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancies.

“Roughly half of all pregnancies in Australia are unplanned which means, as a nation, we need to get better at contraception.” Dr Low says.

“While, nationally, our rate is still lower than some other developed countries there has been a steady increase in vasectomy numbers in Australia of around 4% every year since 2014. Women usually carry the load for contraceptive responsibility throughout a couple’s reproductive life partly because of very limited male contraception options. So it’s great to see men stepping up to take responsibility for family planning once no more kids are desired.”

According to the 2015 United Nations Report on contraception trends, the countries with the highest vasectomy uptake are Canada (22%), United Kingdom (21%) and New Zealand (19.5%). Australia lags behind the United States (11%) with just under 10% of men choosing to have a vasectomy.

A Facebook survey conducted by Marie Stopes Australia shows that many Aussie men have a high level of literacy when it comes to vasectomy, understanding both what the procedure involves as well as its benefits as a contraception option.

“We know that a lot of Aussie men understand the procedure, and a lot of those old myths about a vasectomy somehow affecting your manhood are thankfully on the way out,” Dr Low says.

“Men used to think that it would ruin their sex drive or make them less masculine. Research from Frankfurt University actually showed that men who had a vasectomy reported having higher sex drives, better erections and better orgasms (not to mention their female partners reported higher sexual arousal towards them).”

World Vasectomy Day is 14 November and aims to increase awareness and uptake of vasectomy as a family planning method.
