Children’s Author Celebrates Literary Win for Wildlife
Gold Coast, Australia – Author Candice Lemon-Scott has been shortlisted in the Environment Award for Children’s Literature for her book ‘Eco Rangers: Microbat Mayhem.’
The author of 14 books, Candice said, ‘It’s huge to receive that recognition for a nature-based book. I couldn’t be happier.’
The awards, established in 1994 by The Wilderness Society and Environmental Educators, celebrate excellence in children’s nature books and aim to promote a love of nature.
Candice’s Eco Rangers books, published by New Frontier Publishing, follow the adventures of two kids, Ebony and Jay, who help rescue sick and injured wildlife and solve environmental mysteries. In Microbat Mayhem, they save a colony of microbats, found inside a theme park ride that’s due for demolition.
Candice finished writing the three-book Eco Rangers series while travelling around Australia in her van with her husband and two children. The shortlisted book forms part of a series she hopes will grow awareness and love of wildlife and nature among young people. As part of her research for the books Candice completed the wildlife carer course at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Hospital.
‘I’ve always been a nature lover and it’s incredibly sad to see the plight of our Australian wildlife. I wanted to do something to make a difference,’ she explained. ‘Being a children’s author, I thought what better way than to write a series of books about kids who care for our wildlife and solve environmental mysteries.’
The third book in her series, ‘Eco Rangers: Wildfire Rescue’ was coincidentally released in January this year, during the bushfire crisis.
This year, with the shortlist being announced on May 21st, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the announcement was made via Facebook Live. The awards were judged by Rove McManus, TV star and children’s author, science communicator Dr Jen Martin, and award-winning author David Lawrence. Prior recipients of the award have included authors Tim Winton, Paul Jennings, Jackie French, the late Narelle Oliver, Coral Tulloch, Graeme Base and Wendy Orr.
The award winners will be announced in September.
