PRESS RELEASE: TIN CAN DEPOT OPENS FOR TIN CAN BAY
Tin Can Bay locals can now recycle their eligible beverage containers over summer at a new Container Refund Point located at 3 Scullet Drive, Tin Can Bay.
Recently opening on 6 December, the new Containers for Change depot is operated by U Can Recycle who also run depots in Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Brendale.
U Can Recycle have been providing container refund services to Tin Can Bay locals since October 2019, recently making the decision to expand their offering to include a depot.
Drink containers processed through the depot will provide direct refunds to the local public, as well as servicing the existing mobile refund point in Rainbow Beach and bag drops at the IGA Tin Can Bay, Glenwood and Tiaro.
The depot will be fully staffed and in operation three days per week.
Ken Noye is the Chief Executive Officer of Container Exchange, the not-for-profit organisation that operates Queensland’s Container for Change scheme.
He said the continued support of local organisations, such as U Can Recycle, is critical to the success of the Containers for Change scheme.
“U Can Recycle is a fantastic example of how the Containers for Change scheme is not only helping our environment through contributing toward a reduction in plastic pollution,” said Mr Noye.
“This organisation was one of our first refund operators and have been with Containers for Change since the scheme began in November 2018.
“Since this time, they have continued to go from strength to strength, and now boast an impressive four depots under their operation throughout Queensland.”
U Can Recycle Operations Manager, Joel Alexander, said he is excited about offering a new location for convenient recycling.
“We’re a family-owned business and we’re just thrilled to be able to expand our operations and can’t wait to see even more locals recycling their containers with us,” said Mr Alexander.
“We’ve had great feedback in our other depots, and can’t wait to see people of all ages coming out to recycle and earn back 10 cents for each eligible container – the extra cash really adds up especially around Christmas!
“It’s been a great opportunity to create jobs, give back to local charities, and really be able to be a part of the local community.”

Cleaning up our state since November 2018, Containers for Change aims to increase recycling rates and reduce litter by allowing Queenslanders to exchange eligible drink containers to either earn a 10 cent refund for each container returned, or donate the proceeds of those refunds to their nominated community group.
