PRESS RELEASE: Minister Dimopoulos to open up more National Parks for deer stalking

SSAA Victoria, the state’s peak body for lawful shooting and hunting, has welcomed Environment and Outdoor Recreation Minister Steve Dimopoulos’ announcement that the Government will amend the National Parks Act to allow seasonal deer stalking in the Snowy and Errinundra National Parks.

“This is an announcement that is nearly forty years in the making,” said SSAA Victoria Hunting Development Manager David Laird. “For hunting, we focus on three things – something to hunt, somewhere to hunt, and something to hunt with. Today’s announcement provides Victoria’s deer hunters with a whole lot more of somewhere and something.”

The decision is expected to provide a significant boost to regional communities, especially Orbost in Victoria’s east, which is transitioning from native timber harvesting and stands to benefit from increased hunting tourism.

Mr Laird praised the Minister’s willingness to engage and act.
“Minister Dimopoulos has taken the time to understand what hunters do and what they need, and he’s delivered a practical, meaningful result. This is a strong example of evidence-based policy that supports regional economies, improves public land use, and enhances wellbeing through responsible recreation.”

SSAA Victoria has actively advocated for this change, providing detailed proposals and consistent engagement with decision-makers. The association also acknowledged the broader hunting community.
“This is a shared win for the hunting community, and we acknowledge the efforts of many over the years. For our part, it reflects years of steady, strategic advocacy and above all, it shows what’s possible when governments take the time to engage constructively and listen.”
