Financial planners ask – have we got retirement all wrong?

Thursday, 19 September 2013 10:20

Too many people are retiring not because they can no longer do their job, but because society has decided that somewhere around 65, you should be put out to pasture. These reluctant retirees often end up bored and unhappy. Why do we try to force people to cease work at 65 if they’d like to work longer?

Whilst many Australians enjoy a happy and active retirement, Paul Benson – principal financial planner at Guidance Financial Services – recently started to question whether Australians have got this retirement idea completely wrong.

“Too often I’m coming across people who are retiring, not because they can no longer work, and not because they no longer wish to work, but because they feel that they should retire,” says Mr Benson. “Usually it’s that they hit 65, and either there’s a feeling that it’s time to get out of the way and let the younger ones have their shot, or that they’re entitled to an age pension, and so they would be ‘crazy’ to work on and in effect pass up their ‘entitlement’”.

“Once upon a time,” Paul continues, “we did manual work, and so our bodies wore out; thus in our latter years it was not an option to continue working – today, however, few of the jobs Australians are engage in require hard physical labour anymore.”

Indeed, when the Pension age was originally set at 65, life expectancy for males was 67, so the pension was only intended to support those at the very end of their life. Nowadays, a 65 year old male is expected to live until 83 on average, and a female to almost 87, and every time these figures are revised, the numbers go up.

“Most of us now in the work force should expect to live into our 90s,” Mr Benson points out. “On this basis, perhaps the Age Pension should kick in at 88?”

Guidance Financial Services recently surveyed their clients regarding retirement. When asked “Why do you expect that you will retire?” 55% of respondents selected “to enable me to do the things I can’t do whilst still working, such as extended travel”. When asked how they expect to fill their time in retirement, 91% nominated hobbies and 83% travel.

But why – Benson and Global Financial Services ask – why do we put off things such as travel or pursuing a new hobby until we retire, and then run the risk of health issues preventing us from doing them – or worse; that we really enjoy it and wish we’d started 20 years earlier?

And they may have an answer: employment flexibility seems to be what is lacking. Why do we have to work 5 days a week and have 4 weeks leave a year? Perhaps once the mortgage is under control and the kids off our hands, reducing our hours or days of work, or having 6 or 8 weeks annual leave is what we want. Instead of waiting until retirement to play weekly golf, why not take Wednesday mornings off each week and start playing weekly golf at 50. Instead of waiting until retirement to buy the caravan and travel around Australia, why not take 8 or 12 weeks off and do it at 45? You might even be able to take the kids and have a memorable family experience. Interestingly, often self-employed people do make this choice. What a pity it’s not a possibility for more of our community.

Work is about more than money – it is about social connections, self-worth, mental stimulation and challenge. Somehow we’ve gotten it into our collective psyche that the expectation is (for males at least) to work 40+ hours a week from our early 20s until 65, then cease work altogether (cold turkey?) and enjoy caravanning and playing golf for about 10 years, until health issues slow us down.

According to Paul – “This is dumb!”

Why not work through to 75 if we’re fit and well, but work 3 or 4 days per week? In this regard women seem to have worked things out better. It seems to be far more socially acceptable for a woman to work part time than for a man. This thinking needs to change.

“Our thinking on retirement is outdated,” Paul says. “If you are fit and healthy and want to continue in the work force, then you should be able to do so no matter what your age.”

Music industry insider’s one-of-a-kind vocal health workshop comes to Australia

Tuesday, 15 October 2013 11:59
Everywhere you look, singers are struggling – perhaps they start off well, but soon find themselves ensnared in an ever-worsening tangle of vocal complications, strain, and ultimately neurological and physiological damage, often reaching the point of giving up on their dream of a career in music.

Yet there are also others – a few select artists who seem to sing almost effortlessly, whose range and facility seem impossible – and throughout the years of their career, they continue to endure, somehow unaffected by the passage of time and thousands of hours of singing. How do they do it?

As unlikely as it seems, these are not super-beings who possess some profound genetic ability over us. They are no different from us at all, in fact, except for one, single, precious possession: the right information. Without fail, these artists have comprehensive access to the most advanced rehabilitative methods ever developed; techniques that employ strategies to correct both physiological and neurological issues under acute as well as chronic circumstances.

“Teaching institutions would often have you believe that singing is some elusive art,” says Torb Pederson, the vocal expeditor, researcher and industry-insider who originally developed many of these studio secrets. “But in truth, singing is just like any other physical endeavour – it requires a series of coordinated actions, where muscles and nerves allow you to perform a specific function, just like your favourite sport or any physical activity – therefore, it can be studied, analysed, and learned.”

And now, for the first time, Mr Pederson is coming to Australia. He will be partnering with Brisbane-based recording studio Tall Poppy Productions to teach his techniques to a small, hand-selected group of independent Australian artists.

He is passionate about helping struggling singers who are in danger of losing their voices to vocal complications, and in making this information available, and affordable, to those not supported by the big studios.

“I have allocated only a small block of time from my worldwide schedule to provide this training,” explains Torb. “So, this will be a very small, carefully-selected group.”

$5000 buys lifetime cat boarding

Monday, 02 December 2013 14:34

Cat Napping Suburban Retreat’s innovative owner Ebony Centazzo is shaking up the normally boring cat boarding industry. She has started a campaign on Indiegogo- http://igg.me/p/602071/x/5540928 in the hopes to raise $25,000 to open a second unique indoor cattery in another expanding western suburbs growth area.

“The only reason I have turned to crowd funding is because it is such a small amount, investors wouldn’t be interested. The $25,000 is to secure the bond on a warehouse, which I find ridiculous, l feel I am being taken advantaged on for being a young female business owner”. Explains owner Ebony Centazzo.

One of the perks on offer is lifetime cat boarding for your cat for a $5000 contribution. Jet setting cat owners can instantly see the amazing value being offered, considering cats are known to live into their twenty’s.

“I started Cat Napping two years ago with a loan from my parents, no pre marketing or prior research but with the attitude to try anything once, this campaign is just another part of the journey” she explains.

Unique cat hotel campaign is currently running live now and ends on January 3.

We asked a beauty buff to try it out, and this is what she said…About: A set of 2 hand held devices (one size for the face and one size for the body) using innovative micro-groove technology etched into each skin smoothing edge. These micro-grooves are precision designed to lift away dead skin cells from the surface – leaving behind smoother feeling and younger looking skin.

What we were told: Wow… I am blown away by Exfolimate. This is one extremely impressive tool. Just when I thought exfoliation could not be any simpler, this nifty and extremely lightweight handheld device comes along. Exfolimate is a revolutionary product which at first glance could look like a weapon, but acts more like a “squeegee”, by using a surgical stainless steel edge with micro- grooves (it is not sharp), and when held at a 90 – degree angle, Exfolimate gently grips and glides over the contours of your wet skin to remove the build –up of dead skin cells, black heads and makeup.

It is best used in the opposite direction of hair growth, as when used on my legs after my weekly body scrub, Exfolimate helped to soften skin and focus on areas where my body scrub just doesn’t seem to get to. My legs felt super smooth and more importantly, Exfolimate helped to free hairs which were sitting under the skin’s surface so that my next shave gave me much smoother results and my fake tan application went on with ease.

After being encouraged to try it on my face, I was bewildered to discover that after removing my makeup and cleansing in the shower, Exfolimate gently latched onto traces of makeup on virtually every area of my face, leaving me feeling clean and satisfied.

Exfolimate is so nifty! One minute you will use the face tool to clean makeup traces and the next, you can be exfoliating your underarms with the body tool.

My husband regularly experiences a build-up of sweat as well as shaving rash on his face and neck, so I asked him to try the face tool when he showers. Within a week his face and neck were much smoother, softer and the buildup of skin cells and shaving rash had reduced by half.

Exfolimate comes with a 12 month warranty making it not only extremely handy, but also very affordable. I love it.

Now we want to know what YOU think!

LegalVision becomes Australia’s first legal service provider to accept payments using Bitcoin.

Wednesday, 22 January 2014 15:06
Sydney – LegalVision is Australia’s only legal service provider to allow its customers to pay for legal services with bitcoin. LegalVision CEO Lachlan McKnight was interested in using the crypto-currencies because it fitted with the online firm’s emphasis on efficiency and innovation.

“LegalVision is a progressive and innovative business, we appeal to a new generation of business owners who see the cost benefits of getting all their legal work done online. Bitcoin is just the natural evolution of and could be the future of online payment systems” McKnight said.

“I love that we are the first Australian legal service provider and one of the first businesses in Australia to be using the system. I expect we will be the first of many firms in Australia to start using bitcoin” he said.

Bitcoin is the world’s first decentralised digital currency and allows users to transfer money on the internet without using a bank, it also allows users to transact with each other directly. LegalVision installed bitcoin on the 21st of January, 2014 – which means its customers can now pay for their legal services using the virtual currency; this means LegalVision is the first service provider in Australia to accept payment by bitcoin.

“We use the latest technology so our services are as cheap and easy to use as possible. We provide online legal advice and documents – so it makes perfect sense for us to start using digital currency” McKnight said.

Bitcoin has come to international prominence in the past six months – being welcomed by some major banks and met with caution by some Government agencies. China’s central bank has banned lenders from using the virtual money, while Finland’s banking authorities have said that bitcoin is not real currency. However, many parts of the private sector have embraced the currency; for example, the Citigroup bank says bitcoin could improve society generally by making transactions easier.

Ebay UK will start allowing users to buy and sell in bitcoin on the 10th of February; earlier this month Canada had its first BitcoinATM’s installed which allow people to exchange change for digital currency. On January 16 this year the National Basketball Association franchise Sacramento Kings became the first professional sports team internationally to accept payments via bitcoin.

Other major companies who also accept bitcoin payments are:

– Overstock.com
– Zynga
– WordPress.com
– Virgin Galactic
– OkCupid

“LegalVision has been consistency ahead of the curve with its approach to technology and the way it does business. Our customers know the convenience and cost-efficiency of making the most of new technologies” McKnight said.

A new year brings new beginnings and for some that means divorce.

Among the legal fraternity January is known as divorce month. Following the holiday festivities practitioners have often noted an influx of clients seeking divorce.

This increase can be attributed to the festive season being a stressful time and if your relationship is already fragile the increased time spent together with additional pressures can become the straw that breaks the camel’s back. For others the holidays allows time for reflection and New Year resolutions and they simply decide they are not happy and cannot contend with another year in their relationship.

If this resonates with you and you find yourself unhappy in your relationship or marriage fear not, there’s an app to help with the overwhelming, stressful and daunting task of dealing with a divorce or break up.
