Curatorial+Co. proudly announces PAGES, a landmark exhibition celebrating the gallery’s 10th anniversary. Opening this October, PAGES brings together 10 artists to explore the complexity, duality, and enduring relevance of paper as both object and subject.

PAGES honours Curatorial+Co.’s very first exhibition, PAPER, and returns to the material that launched its journey. Paper is at once primordial and protean – both object and subject, modern and ancient, delicate yet resilient. Through this medium, the exhibition traces a decade of transformation, vision, and adaptability.

Since its inception in 2015, launched initially as an online gallery from Director Sophie Vander’s dining room table, Curatorial+Co. has grown from a pioneering online platform to a leading force in contemporary art. From pop-up shows to its first physical exhibition space in Redfern, the gallery has consistently championed emerging and established artists, with a strong focus on platforming women and underrepresented voices in the arts.

Harnessing the limitless possibilities of paper, PAGES invites 10 artists to elevate and transform the material through contemporary fine art practices.

THE ARTISTS
Artists Susie Dureau and Kate Banazi, who have been part of the gallery’s story since its genesis, are among the 10 participating artists. Dureau, expanding on her recent practice, will illustrate the sound of paper through painterly compositions. Banazi, a master printmaker, will create the exhibition’s central installation, referencing two pivotal milestones in Curatorial+Co.’s history: their first major international acquisition, Nick Cave’s Spinner Forest, and its first full-scale hotel curation at Lanson Place, Melbourne – a former printing factory in which Banazi’s work is a key feature.

A time-based artwork by Katrina O’Brien will unfold over five days in the gallery’s William Street window, echoing Curatorial+Co.’s debut presentation at Sydney Contemporary, in which Antonia Mrljak completed a live painting over the course of the fair. At the time, Curatorial+Co. was the first online-only gallery to have participated.

Other highlights include a work by creative duo Jasmine Poole and Chris Sewell, who draw on domestic nostalgia through laser-cut paper akin to the pattern of lace curtains. Amber Hearn returns to papier-mâché, exploring the transformative potential of paper through technical intervention. Guest artist Colleen DaRosa will revisit a work from PAPER, and André de Vanny will present a stop-motion video created entirely from paper.

Caroline Duffy will build a site-specific installation made from discarded cardboard, fabricated into a honeycomb-like structure that embodies the resilience and connection of a matriarchal system – a befitting tribute to Curatorial+Co.’s nine-woman team and predominantly female-identifying roster of artists.

ABOUT CURATORIAL+CO.
