Students take a gap year to learn life lessons

Tuesday, 27 November 2012 15:10

As high school comes to an end for another round of Year 12 students, many young Australians are faced with the challenge of taking the next step into the real world.

Rather than going straight into university, more and more students are choosing to take a gap year out to explore the world, learn more about themselves and focus on what they really want to do with their lives.

Sydney girl Annie Navin completed Year 12 at Barker College, Sydney and embarked on a GapBreak program with Australian company, Antipodeans Abroad, which offers school-leavers the chance to volunteer in a developing country. She has recently returned home after spending 3 months in Ghana, where she lived with a local family and taught children in the village schools.

When asked why she chose to take a GapBreak Annie replied, “Going straight to university never appealed to me so the option of taking a gap year seemed like the obvious alternative. I couldn’t think of anything worse than hitting the books again! Whilst most of my friends wanted to follow the party scene in Europe, I knew there was a big wide world out there to explore.

I’m so glad I chose Ghana because I got to live as a local in a part of the world that most people have never heard of. That’s something you don’t experience as a normal tourist.”

Annie’s experience in Ghana taught her to keep an open mind and to take advantage of every opportunity offered. She reflects on what she learnt from her time away, “Being totally immersed in a developing country takes you out of your comfort zone, but I feel so lucky to have had that experience. I came home and looked at everything differently. People have so little in the way of material possessions, yet they are happy and welcoming.

My Ghanaian family took me under their wing as a daughter and a sister. ”

Annie is now studying a double degree in Arts and Social Work at the University of Sydney, and expresses interest to see more of the world. “When you travel you learn so much about yourself, other cultures and the world around you. On top of that, I had a lot of fun, went to some incredible places and made life-long friendships. I’d love to see more of Africa as it’s such a huge and diverse continent.”

About Antipodeans Abroad:
Antipodeans Abroad offers a range of educational travel experiences for high-school students, gap year and university students. Participants provide much appreciated work in disadvantaged communities across Africa, Asia and South America, as well as participating on work and language programs in Europe. Students’ return home with invaluable life experience, increased confidence and personal development.

2013 Small Business Awards Nomination Now Open

Friday, 07 December 2012 10:50
Australia’s favourite small business awards organisation

Small businesses made big gains in 2012, with six sole traders named as finalists in the Australian Excellence Awards Top 40. Over 1,200 Australian small business owners and their managers earned a nomination in the 2012 Awards Program, with 183 winners in the Service Excellence, Women in Business, Employer of Choice and People’s Choice Awards announced throughout the year.

“Despite an increase in online sales, these awards demonstrate that consumer satisfaction and confidence in Australian small businesses is growing in some sectors, which is fantastic,” says Awards Centre Manager, Anthony Christian. “And it’s not only our award nominees and winners who have benefited from this result, but their trade suppliers, employees, and ultimately their customers, too.”

“Business diversity has also been strong, and showed us that more so than in previous years, business leaders are keenly interested in understanding and responding to their markets better by actively engaging with their best resource – their customers,” adds Anthony.

The Australian Excellence Awards Centre has also listened and responded to small business owners with the introduction of a re-structured program to give businesses even more chances of success, lowering entry fees and eliminating all licence fees. Unlike traditional award programs, our 2013 nominees are now eligible for 12 monthly awards with just a single entry fee of $48 (includes GST).

“From sole traders to company directors to franchisees, Australian business now has the perfect opportunity to be recognised and rewarded.”

Unlike other awards, the Australian Excellence Awards are not affiliated with or sponsored by any other organisation, which makes for a fairer and more transparent evaluation process.

“It’s always been important to us that we stay independent,” says Anthony. “And that these awards are accessible to everyone, not just those aligned with corporate partners. We’ve seen a family-owned real estate agent in Far North Queensland, to a hair salon in rural Victoria, to a vet in Perth become award winners.”

New iPad App Gets Children School-Ready

Monday, 07 January 2013 09:35

Parents are preparing to send their children off to school for the first time. An Australian Mother of two has developed a way to give children entering school in this technological age a head start by creating an educational iPad app.

Rebecca Monument said that she, like most parents were aware that basic literacy skills developed in the home long before a child starts school.

“I created the app because I wanted to give my children the best of every possible opportunity,” said Ms Monument. “I was worried as my kids weren’t learning the correct way to write the alphabet, that they would have to re-learn it when they started school.”

After the application was released in October this year Ms Monument approached a local teacher for feedback. Ms Tanya Burton from Whitehouse Primary School in Melbourne agrees that Writeforschool is a resourceful learning tool for young children, and that the app that will complement the introduction of iPads into the prep classrooms in 2013.

“The application combines many features that other similar writing applications fail to deliver, like a variety of accents and a choice of the writing fonts taught in Australian schools” Ms Burton notes. “The large number of fonts back up what is taught in the school curriculum; it not only includes letters and numbers but blends of letters.”

The idea came to Ms Monument and she began developing the iPad application Writeforschool after her children, aged five and six began taking great interest in playing the games on her iPad.

“I thought if I could make educational game for my children, they could begin to learn to write in the cursive they are taught at their school the correct way,” Ms Monument explained. “My children love the app and its exciting graphics that can be completely personalised.”

Ms Monument hopes that her application is able to help as many young children as possible get a head start for this school year.

Unburnable power poles get the lights back on

Tuesday, 15 January 2013 14:15
The bushfires burning throughout the Eastern States will ignite power utility interest in equipment suited to withstand extreme weather conditions and to help prevent power outages when fire strikes. Unburnable poles are an important component of systems able to quickly restore power supplies after the fire has passed.

The new Titan power pole made by Dulhunty Poles Pty Ltd in Geelong, Victoria, stands alone as unburnable and non conductive. Fire testing to stringent criteria set down by the Energy Networks Association has been carried out on both Titan and wood poles. The new pole is the only non wood pole to have been subjected to this test and the only pole not to be made unusable by the test.

The Titan factory was built in Victoria because of a perceived need created by the Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009. The special plant was opened by Premier Ted Baillieu in 2011 and several thousand poles have been exported to the Pacific region. Surprisingly, no poles have been bought by any of the Victorian power authorities. In contrast, NSW power utilities have conducted extensive trials and are well advanced in their assessment of the pole. Tasmanian authorities are also aware of the poles and may consider using them in the recovery process now underway in that state.

The pole is made using a patented material first developed for crucibles in ferrous foundries. The material withstands the effect of molten steel and will cope with the intense heat of Australian bushfires preventing loss of power poles and speeding the reconnection of electricity.

Although the Dulhunty Poles product is a little more expensive to manufacture, its superior strength to weight ratio and impregnability to rust, rot and termites make it competitive with all others on an installed cost or whole of life basis.

Monday, 18 February 2013 14:50

Pete Evans, chef, health advocate and star of Seven’s hit series, My Kitchen Rules announces the launch of 100% Natural Raw C Coconut Water.

“We’re thrilled to have one of the food industry’s most creative, charismatic and healthy stars join the team”, Natural Raw C co-founder, Scott Mendelsohn said in a statement.

Pete Evans’ personality and passion for healthy products are a fantastic fit for Natural Raw C and we look forward to working together’. Scott added.

The increased demand for coconut water worldwide is due to its natural hydrating qualities and a great source of nutrients including calcium and magnesium. Coconut water also contains the same amount of potassium as a banana.

My partners in Natural Raw C have the business experience and the same passion for coconut water, keeping it pure and healthy, as I do and we are very proud to share this with the Australian public”.
