Melbourne psychologist claims education is in crisis. He offers solutions.

Tuesday, 04 June 2013 14:20
‘We know what we should be doing and we know how to do it . . . What is left but to act!’

This is the rallying cry of author, Greg Nicholson, psychologist and educator, who claims in his book (for students, Grade 5—Year 12) that Western education is in crisis. The book is held by Monash University library, with forewords by Dr. Tui McKeown of Monash and Professor Frank Vajda, Professorial Fellow at the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne, who writes that it contains ‘a feast of brilliant tacit knowledge’.

Addressing the uncertainty of our children’s futures in a rapidly changing world, Nicholson notes that despite governments and schools paying lip service to change through assessment systems (think NAPLAN) and greater school resources, meaningful reform is alarmingly absent. In an introductory message to parents, he asserts that this should be as great a concern to us all, as global regions which flail in a haemorrhaging economy. He adds, ‘Surely our cues could not be more glaring.’

Reach for the Sky is a wake-up call, presented in a spirit of contribution towards change. It offers students and their families an opportunity to future-proof themselves against the unknown challenges ahead. Nicholson observes that when good times plummet to gloom and doom, it is the resilient who flourish: those who can assess and prioritise problems, who can innovate, resolve conflict, manage time and think on their feet!

Nicholson’s teaching is focused on empowering students to think, analyse, evaluate and problem solve, with ‘written communication’ to the fore as the greatest predictor of school success and beyond. Offering a trove of skills and resources to augment student curricula learning, friendly coaching strategies also cover overcoming procrastination, fear of failing and exam stress.

The book highlights how to take control of one’s learning, acquire self-reliance and become an independent and creative thinker. After the comparative ‘spoon-feeding’ of school life, without such skills Nicholson submits that students often flounder in the face of tertiary study demands.

For education to be universally relevant in the coming years, Nicholson stresses that at all costs it must become engaging, inspirational and innovative. True revolution, he says, means changing the way teachers teach so that pupils will want to learn—so that they will become passionate and competitive about learning—and thus be equipped to navigate the contours of their future lives, and contribute productively towards building safe, prosperous and harmonious communities in which to live. ‘To offer our youth less is irresponsible,’ he declares.

Meanwhile, the states continue to toy with our children’s economic future, putting party politics ahead of consensus to the Gonski Funding Plan—a constructive first step to what Nicholson terms, ‘true revolution’ in Australian education.

BOOK: ‘REACH FOR THE SKY: Discovering the power of Working Smart!’ (New ed.)

Complaints to City of Sydney council about 101 Vagina Exhibition

Friday, 28 June 2013 15:22
Complaints have been made to City of Sydney council about the 101 Vagina Exhibition on now at 107 Projects gallery at 107 Redfern st, Redfern.

One complaint focused on the posters around town advertising the exhibition. Though the posters contain no nudity they prominently feature the word vagina, which some people still seem to find offensive. The other complaint was that there were vagina photos displayed in the gallery windows, which there are not, though the photos are visible through the gallery windows when looking closely.

The police came to the 107 Projects gallery Thursday morning to follow up on the complaint, but they left when they realised that no photos were displayed in the windows and that they were clearly not pornographic.

However, they also said that something may need to be done if more complaints were received. It was not specified what that might entail.

The 101 Vagina Exhibition is on every day 12-5pm until this Sunday. On Saturday the Festival of the Vagina will bring together diverse artists, performers, educators and musicians in a celebration of the vagina with the aim of removing the taboo and shame that many people obviously still feel.

Besides the performers and speakers the day will also feature a Vagina Crafternoon, Large Vagina Photo Booth, Muff Muffin Decorating, Vaginal Mary Confessional, and Yoni Temple. Any artists are invited to bring their own vagina art to the gallery for exhibition.

Creator of the 101 Vagina coffee-table book and exhibition says: “Complaints like this show that we still have a long way to go in the removing of this taboo and in feeling comfortable with our bodies and our sexuality. We were all conceived and born through the vagina, vaginas are sacred, not obscene!”

Digital radio – Inexpensive tuner upgrade for existing Hi-Fi systems

Monday, 17 May 2010 11:04
Most digital radios sold to date have been standalone portable radios. While there are a few DAB+ tuners on the market, all have other features, such as media streaming and Internet Radio, which many people either do not want or do not want to pay for – ranging in price from $499-$2,500.

As a result, out of the hundreds of thousands of Hi-Fi systems in Australian homes, only a small number now access digital radio; and most HiFi systems available in stores today, a year after the launch of DAB+ radio, still do not have DAB+ tuners built in.

An inexpensive upgrade is now available that plugs straight into a standard auxiliary input (the same way you would plug in a CD player) and will upgrade any HiFi system to DAB+* digital radio for just $175 RRP (* where signal is available).

The new DAB+ tuner, from Plum Audio, is a small appliance that can be placed on a table top or bookshelf: this means, for example, that the song title and artist information can be easily viewed.

The Plum Audio DAB+ tuner has a two line screen which displays the station name on the first line and a user definable information second line which can display information sent by the radio station such as; the song title & artist, program information, news, sport, weather & traffic information.

The Plum Audio DAB+ tuner comes with a remote control which manages all functions including volume (which is handy since many older amplifiers do not have remote controls). It has a RRP of $175 and is covered by a 1 year warranty. The Plum Audio digital tuner will be available from June 2010 and will be sold through Hi-Fi retailers. 101 Vagina calendar ready for Xmas; 101 Penis project progressing

Tuesday, 03 December 2013 13:47
Following the successful exhibition of the 101 Vagina book at Sydney Fringe and Melbourne Fringe festivals, photographer Philip Werner is now busy with the follow-up project, 101 Penis, as well as planing the US launch of 101 Vagina.

The photographic work for the 101 Penis project is now well under way with 29 out of 101 participants already photographed, and Werner is seeking more participants.

101 Vagina and 101 Penis are about breaking down the taboo around our genitalia and body image shame generally. They confront the lies we are told about what’s normal, and celebrate our diversity and humanity.

The already completed 101 Vagina book comprises black and white photos of 101 women’s vaginas, each accompanied by a message or story written by each woman about her vagina. The messages are candid and span the spectrum of emotions. Together they form a small compendium of women’s experiences around their vaginas and womanhood generally.

101 Vagina is particularly relevant today given the startling rise in women and teenagers seeking labiaplasty (cosmetic surgery on the vagina) in Australia, while we lament genital mutilation in other countries at the same time.

101 Vagina is already published locally as a coffee-table book (Taboo Books) and is launching in the USA in April 2014.

Interested in participating in 101 Penis? Get in touch!

Looking for that perfect Christmas gift? Buy the 101 Vagina calendar or book for your friends online at the 101 Vagina website.

Big Music Presents Australia’s Most Innovative Music Education Program for Preschoolers

Monday, 08 April 2013 15:29
SYDNEY – Big Music in Crows Nest, Australia’s emerging leader in music education for kids and adults, unveiled today LITTLE WING, an early music education program for preschool age (3 to 5 year old) children.

Much research and evidence has been documented citing the benefits of music education during a child’s early years to help them better develop skill sets in areas such as pre-literacy, motor skills, and coordination. Little Wing creates a fun learning experience by employing strong teamwork and cooperative learning. The games and activities taught at Little Wing, all set to classic rock and pop music that both parents and young children enjoy, are designed to stimulate and mold young minds. The program will teach rhythm and beat patterns, tracking and sequencing sounds and words, tonal processing, auditory focus and the fine motor skills used in instrument play and visual arts. The Little Wing program strengthens skill that can better prepare children for kindergarten.

Big Music searched the world for best-practice preschool music programs before acquiring the rights to Little Wing in Australia under licence from the School of Rock in the US. The School of Rock spent two years working with experts in the field of early childhood education, as well as professional musicians to develop a truly unique approach to inspiring kids to love music. Big Music’s specially-trained and accredited teaching staff will lead the classes. Students enrolled in the new program will participate in weekly 45-minute classes over an 8-10 week period. Enrolment fees are $30 per class, or $25 if paying for a full 8-10 week term in advance.

“We believe that if we want kids to learn to love music, then we must give them great music to listen to,” explains Scott Sheppard, Director of Big Music. “Little Wing will expose kids to classic songs that have inspired adults AND kids throughout the history of music.” Â

“We saw an opportunity to do things differently, and by partnering with School of Rock to bring Little Wing to Australia we are in a unique position to make that vision a reality,” said David Berkman, Chairman of Big Music. “We are incredibly excited to introduce Little Wing to preschool children in Australia. We are confident that through our unique approach to early music education, the children in our programs will become more musically capable, aware, and inspired, while we foster a love for music in them that will last a lifetime.”

Little Wing was designed to be portable, so that the program can be delivered at affiliate locations. This will allow Big Music to partner with select preschools who want to add a music enrichment program to their existing curriculum. Other settings for the program may include daycares, community centres, private homes and even children’s parties.

For more info and a video describing the philosophy of the program visit: http://www.bigmusic.com.au/Learn/little-wing

Coffee for Life? Accountants have never been this innovative — or have they?

Monday, 25 November 2013 09:56
Imagine this; an accounting firm setting up its office in a café — and not just any café — one that’s owned and operated by the firm AND one that’s being crowd-funded right now.

And in Brisbane too!

Ben Walker is the Accountant involved. And you get a clue about Ben when you realise his 10-month old successful firm has an interesting name: INSPIRECA (where the ‘CA’ stands for ‘Chartered Accountant’. That naming flows through to the café too — not surprisingly now, it’s the INSPIRE Café.

You get to realise pretty quickly that Ben is, to say the least, a little different. Here’s how he puts it:

“Every week, I get to work with amazing, switched-on people running businesses. Some of them are start-ups, others are established. And it struck me that there’s got to be a way to bring professionals together. Somewhere you can have informal meetings, get your head down over your computer undisturbed when you need to focus, and hang out with peers. ‘Networking’ can feel artificial, but when you’re all in the same environment drinking great coffee it’s what you do naturally.”

Ben Walker’s enthusiasm is contagious. The accountant’s vision of a place for professionals to work, rest and play is bearing fruit in the form of the Inspire Café in Brisbane. The space is ripe for conversion, and Ben has had plans drawn up to give it a convivial vibe that suits your needs, whether you’re looking for a meeting venue, or somewhere to wind down with a beer before the weekend.

Not only is Ben’s vision innovative, so is his plan to fund it. The total cost of transforming the building he’s identified is around $200,000 – and he’s looking to raise half of that money in the next month through crowd-funding.

Crowd-funding has been populiarised over the past few years to provide funding for anything from films, political campaigns, musicians’ albums and a variety of new and innovative inventions. A study from Massolution has found that donation and reward-based funding grew by 85% to well over US$1B in 2012, seeing growth primarily in Europe and the United States.

“What we’re aiming to do is involve people in the excitement of the Inspire Café before it’s open. We want to create a buzz. Our audience is business people, and we’re offering them the chance to invest in a place that can make a real difference to the way they do what they do,” says Ben.

Indiegogo is the site Ben has chosen for the venture, one that’s already established a strong reputation for gathering financial support for a wide range of successful projects. Backing the café will give supporters dollar-for-dollar credit at Inspire, to spend on world class coffee, and a tempting range of foods from the healthy to the indulgent. Not only this, but Ben has put together a “Coffee for Life” perk, where the supporter as suggested, receives coffee for the rest of their life; or the “No Brainer” where for $100 the supporter receives $1,000 in value of coffee for the next 10 years.

The team crewing Inspire will include seasoned baristas and waiting staff, and they’re clear that the professional clientele deserve the very best service. Supporters of the campaign will also contribute to a project providing water for people in Africa needing access to fresh and hygienic supplies – if the funding target is reached, nearly a million people will be helped in this way.

With a Café Launch Party of 13 December to tie in the with INSPIRECA Christmas party, the team are excited to get things off the ground. Depending on tradesman and council sign offs, the café could see a soft launch in early December.

You can find the online campaign for the Inspire Café here – http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/inspire-cafe–3

Or Shortlink http://insp.ca/19T4k9U

Check it out, and maybe you’ll see Ben and other backers at the launch party.

Containing Spread of Antibiotic Resistant Infections: New HGS Test for C. difficile

Tuesday, 21 December 2010 14:32
Sydney, Australia – Resistance to antibiotics of the bacterium Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) has been recorded in many hospitals and centres overseas, resulting in increased spread and deaths. In response to an ongoing Sydney outbreak of the antibiotic resistant strain of C. difficile, Human Genetic Signatures (HGS) announces wider availability of a new genetic test which allows for pre-emptive screening of these antibiotic resistant, hypervirulent C. difficile bacteria, and differentiates these more serious strains from other types of C. difficile.

The new genetic test, called “EasyScreen C. difficile Complete” helps to distinguish the strains of C. difficile that have evolved into the hypervirulent form that has caused severe illness and deaths overseas. These hypervirulent (027 and related) types of C. difficile are also known as the Quebec strain. They have killed 7% of those infected in Canada, with such infections particularly common in hospitalised patients and those in nursing homes.

A beta release of the EasyScreen C. difficile Complete identified the presence of the 027 strain in patients in northern Sydney hospitals, as advised by NSW Health on 17 December, 2010. The test can also identify other types of hypervirulent C. difficile such as the 078 strain. EasyScreen C. difficile Complete will be available “for research use” and is completed within 4 hours, requires minimal hands on time and is compatible with most types of equipment commonly found in molecular testing laboratories. The rapid and accurate nature of the EasyScreen C. difficile Complete allows for it to be used as a screening test for patients in order to prevent future outbreaks.

The EasyScreen C. difficile Complete uses HGS’ proprietary 3baseTM technology, which was invented in Australia. This test complements existing Human Genetic Signatures 3baseTM assays for detection of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Methicillin Resistant Staphlycoccus aureus (MRSA), Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and Hepatitis C (HCV).

Early detection in a 027 C. difficile outbreak, such as the one identified in Sydney hospitals, is critical. Delays can cause death and spread of the infection. Testing that previously took days to complete can now be performed in hours when using the HGS test, helping to quickly identify these dangerous strains of C. difficile. There is no doubt that screening for the new and deadly strains of C. difficile infection will help contain the spread of resistant C. difficile, and contribute to responses to this outbreak, and others like it.
