Sam Soliman helps teenage boys make good choices

Thursday, 07 March 2013 14:30
World Champion Kickboxer and current IBF No.1 Boxing contender Sam Soliman visited the Waterlions Swimming Club last Thursday night to give an extraordinary talk to the teenage boys.

Sam is the lead facilitator of the program “Choices – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” which is designed to help teenage boys make good choices instead of ones that can turn ugly. Sam has always given back to the community and this program is a great example of his community spirit.

The timing of such a talk was perfect given the ‘ugly’ choice by some to use Stilnox at the London Olympics.

All the boys were impressed by Sam’s attitude to life, training, healthy diet and enjoying your chosen sport. We’re sure that the boys will make ‘good choices’ in pressure situations following Sam’s lecture, and steer clear of bad and ugly choices.

The Waterlions Committee would like to thank Head Coach Wayne Lawes for taking the time out of his busy schedule to help facilitate the meeting.

After the meeting Wayne Lawes said “ I had the absolute privilige of being able to watch Sam Soliman train just after Christmas so when I heard about this program I just had to be involved. If it helps just one boy make a better decision in their life then it is worthwhile.”

101 Vagina Book Launch, Exhibition and Festival delights, confronts, unites and divides.

Wednesday, 20 March 2013 15:45
With labiaplasty on the rise and sexual violence endemic, Philip Werner sees the need to address sexual repression.

This Friday 22 March 2013, sees the inaugural Festival of the Vagina in combination with the 101 Vagina Book Launch and Exhibition being held in one of Melbourne’s premier alternative venues, 1000 Pound Bend.

Toni Childs, who wrote the foreword for the book, and is flying down from the Gold Coast to attend the launch says: “If you are living on planet earth it is because of the vagina”.

And Banksy is often credited with saying “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable”. This is exactly what is happening.

The one day festival is a combined event with the 101 Vagina book launch and exhibition. Rather than simply cut a ribbon and make a boring speech, the organiser and author, Philip Werner, decided to turn the launch event into a larger celebration of vaginas, positive body image and sexuality generally. The exhibition runs all day with festival activities kicking off from 4pm.

The event brings together a diverse range of Melbourne and interstate artists, educators, musicians and even politicians. They are all uniting to smash the taboo around our genitalia through art, poetry, movement, craft, and music.

It has also caught the attention of the ABC, making a documentary about labiaplasty called The Vagina Diaries, who will be interviewing participants and filming the evenings activities. Channel 31 and even a student journalists will be there to document this event which is intriguing so many.

101 Vagina and the Festival of the Vagina are about breaking down the taboos and body image shame that prevent so many women from feeling comfortable with their bodies. Various media are awash with messages that women are not fine the way they are, but instead, need to buy this product or have that operation, in order to become “normal”.

It’s rubbish. One outrageous example is that while most women’s labia minora protrude from their labia majora, Australian censorship law prevents such normal vaginas from being shown in soft-core, unclassified porn. They have to be airbrushed away. Our law! And cosmetic surgeons are offering to do physically what Photoshop does virtually.

All this needs to change and there are many movements afoot to counter these ignorant censorship decisions and commercially exploitative interests. The Large Labia Project tumblr blog, another Australian project, recently gained widespread international media attention for showing the world a real picture of how normal women look. There are vagina crafternoons, where crafty types get together to sew, bake, knit, or paint genitalia. Many educational workshops, events and sex therapists are all working to correct the distorted messages.

There is also increasing debate about why we ban female genital mutilation, while plastic surgeons are allowed to charge tens of thousands for labiaplasty, as if that is not female genital mutilation. Not to mention male genital mutilation, circumcision.

Werner sees these practices as a form of violence and believes that sexual repression and sexual violence, if not violence in general, are causally related. As the organiser of the peace march for Jill Meagher, he believes we must look to the deeper causes of sexual abuse. This does not let aggressors off the hook, but if we actually want things to change we need to investigate and confront our own discomfort with our bodies and sexuality. The repression of sexuality will otherwise continue play out somewhere, and unfortunately all too often it’s through acts of abuse. A look around the world seems to confirm that cultures which accept sexuality as normal and natural are generally less violent and more peaceful.

In this milieu, 101 Vagina and the Festival of the Vagina are confronting, delighting, uniting and dividing people in equal measure. Some feminists are decrying another “man exploiting women”, while others are lauding the creation of more body acceptance and dialogue. Some sex educators have criticised the book for showing only black and white “closed leg’ photos rather than up close colour images, while others are celebrating the depiction of all shapes and sizes and the sharing of powerful stories. Some take delight in the celebration, others feel confronted. The vagina draws powerful responses from many quarters.

Attendees will find themselves surrounded by the 101 photos taken for the 101 Vagina book over the course of two years, along with the 101 stories, messages written by the women from or about their vaginas to the world. Other artists work will also be on display, including works from the day’s crafternoon activities. The evening will then see a variety of workshops, speakers, performers and musicians contribute their take on what vagina love means to them and why it’s important.

Philip Werner is a Melbourne based photographer and peace activist.

New ground: emerging artists work together for musical growth

Friday, 05 April 2013 13:33

My Goodness McGuiness and Miss Little “Corduroy & Knit” Tour May 2013

Songwriter Miss Little and musician Lucian McGuiness strip both genres back to celebrate melody as king, in a tour presenting brand new music written collaboratively by McGuiness and McCallum, treading a faint path between modern jazz and gentle pop. The tour will take in venues in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and regional NSW during May 2013.

For McCallum and McGuiness, this project is about musical growth. With healthy emerging solo careers as performers and writers in different corners of the music industry, McCallum and McGuiness sought to work together to expand their scope and skills:
McGuiness said, “As a jazz trained musician, I’ve been dancing around songwriting and pop music influences for a long time, without approaching it head on. Then 2012 Sarah and I began discussing the possibility of writing together, and ultimately the opportunity came sooner than expected.”

“2013 is a year of collaboration for me and I was really excited when Lucian and I started concocting this project,” said Sarah McCallum. “You learn so much about yourself as a musician from getting out of your comfort zone and going into someone else’s musical world. I also feel it helps to solidify the musical community more when artists get together and throw paint at the wall so to speak. This project is a great adventure and I can’t wait to see it unfurl fully and to share it with People around the country.”

Miss Little is the moniker for New Zealand born Sarah McCallum’s unique brand of song writing that sits in the heart of traditional pop forms, underpinned by electronic rhythms, jazz, noise, vocal layering and a deepseated influence of classical music. Now based in Sydney, her debut ‘When Things Fall Apart And Into Place’ (Laughing Outlaw Records) is a nine-track album that explores the pain and beauty of transition. Described in Brisbane’s Time off as “An Intricate album of sonorous pop songs that eschew traditional musical norms.”

Lucian McGuiness is the composer and trombonist behind the world-jazz ensemble My Goodness, McGuiness! whose debut album ‘Insular Peninsular‘ (Rufus Records) was described as “delicate” by ABC RN’s Luck Oceans and “blithe as a bee in spring” by the Sydney Morning Herald. A part-time resident in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, McGuiness returns to Australia regularly to lead offbeat ensembles Salvation Street Shout ( a gospel trombone choir), Vintage Quartestra (a 19th century style mini-dance-orchestra) and Little Egypt’s Burlesque Club (a 1950s rhythm’n’blues cabaret) for the arts festival circuit. McGuiness’ solid pop credentials include recent brass work for Joanna Newsom, Holly Throsby and Passenger.

“Miss Little is… assured, fragile, tender, sexy.”
— the Age

“There is pure quality to the McGuiness tone, coupled with a less-is-more approach.”

Is Multiculturalism a serious matter for Australia?

Friday, 26 April 2013 10:20
Australian Multicultural Community Services (AMCS) presents: Multicultural Conference – Strengthening Diversity.

A compelling conference brings together ethno-specific and multicultural organisations, relevant government departments and other stakeholders to explore current challenges and changes in the health care, aged care and community service sectors.

Popular entertainer Magda Szubanski will MC the conference with a line-up of inspiring speakers and panellists from community, government and education sectors, who will share their insights and expertise. These include the Honorable Nicholas Kotsiras, Minister for Multicultural Affairs & Citizenship, The Honorable Kate Lundy, Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Senator Richard Di Natale, Greens Spokesperson for Multiculturalism.

Magda Szubasnki said: “I am very excited to participate in this conference. The ability to live beside, understand, appreciate, accept, celebrate and work with people who are different from us is one of the most important challenges facing humanity. I am all for any kind of discussion that promotes understanding and compassion and teaches better, smarter ways for us to share this planet.”

Australian multiculturalism is a complex policy-strategy. The current wave of immigration to Australia and the change in profile of immigrants raises a number of questions that need to be addressed in both the political, service providers and public forums.

Elizabeth Drozd, conference host and CEO of Australian Multicultural Community Services said: “The conference will show how service providers can work in a more collaborative environment and explore government commitments to ethnic communities in Australia. The aim is to develop mechanisms that strengthen our practice.”

Ethnic and Multicultural community organisations are an essential part of the broader service system.

Who Should Attend: Service providers, government department personnel, policy makers, researchers, community organisation leaders, students, academics and other stakeholders.

Proudly supported by Victorian Multicultural Commission and Kalyna Care

Workplace Safety Company’s Customers Help Raise $10,000 For Youth Charity

Thursday, 02 May 2013 09:23
Sydney – Last month, Seton Australia, a workplace safety products supplier invited its customers to participate in a short survey to provide suggestions on how Seton can service their customers better. Upon completion of the survey, Seton customers could choose one of 3 reward options. One of these options was for Seton to donate $20 to the Salvo’s Youth Foundation, the Salvation Army’s major response to youth homelessness in Australia. Seton had an overwhelming response for the donation option and thanks to the generosity of Seton customers, $9,880 was raised.

Seton increased this amount and donated a massive $10,000 to the Salvo’s Youth Foundation on Wednesday 24th April, at the Seton head office in Sydney. Esther Savvas, Managing Director, Seton Australia, said, “We’re so pleased that so many of our wonderful Seton customers chose the option to donate to such a worthy cause, this wouldn’t have been possible without their support.”

The $10,000 cheque was presented by Seton’s Managing Director, Esther Savvas and Seton’s Marketing Manager, Tony Andoniou to John Harris, Captain Nesan Kistan and Bianca Orsini from The Salvation Army. John Harris, Territorial Youth Liaison Officer said, “I was so totally moved, surprised, humbled and so very, very grateful of the $10,000 donation your team presented us. To have this investment just filled me with hope and to stand in front of all those people and be presented with this gift was beautiful. I look forward to sharing with you where and what we intend to use this donation for and provide back to your customers updates to how their generosity helped us change lives”.

The donation will go towards programs that offer critical points of intervention and support for homeless and disadvantaged young people between 16 and 24 years of age. These support services include; counselling, crisis and transitional accommodation, legal support, accredited workplace training, education and vocational opportunities. On any given night, the Salvo’s Youth Foundation also helps to accommodate and feed more than 100 homeless young people. New centre-left party with a focus on design, innovation and technology enters the political fray

Monday, 06 May 2013 10:59
The Lamington Party, named after the uniquely Australian dessert, is focused on bringing Australia’s problem-solving skills, ingenuity and generosity to the fore. It is a new political party with equality, sustainability and innovation at its heart and sustainable development at the core of its policies.

The Lamington Party has a vision for the future of Australia: one where the regional cities are well connected to the capitals; one where the government is a case study for democracy and efficiency; one where design, technology and innovation become part of our way of doing business; and one where we all have a strong social safety net and equal opportunity to succeed in life.

The party’s founder, Jason McKenzie, a Brisbane-based entrepreneur and business advisor, noted, “The internet is a leveller; we need to take advantage of this by using creativity and technology to become more productive, to keep costs down and to create new export opportunities. Technology, when well- applied, can also provide incredible advantages and remove the tyranny of distance. It could allow for the back-office of a UK firm to be based in Newcastle; for a farmer to manage water and stock levels from a mobile app and for education to be delivered in new ways to help professionals stay ahead. The opportunities are endless, but the government, industry and Australians must move quickly to seize the advantages.”

“To reverse the trend of thousands of manufacturing and office jobs leaving our shores, we believe that fast-tracking investments in new enterprises, particularly in supporting farmers and enhancing university level education will deliver results. Fast-tracking investments in fast rail and public transport will improve productivity and help to grow regional hubs.”

“Lamington also reflects the views of many Australians: indigenous people must be recognised in the constitution; mandatory detention, created by Keating and perpetuated by subsequent Liberal and Labor governments should be dismantled; and equal marriage must be recognised.”

A number of other policies have already been outlined including:
1) Creation of a $1 billion ‘Silicon beach’ technology investment fund within the Future Fund that focuses on angel funding and investment in tech, design, agribusiness, energy and fashion start-ups

2) Tax reform including support for a 49% tax rate for incomes over $500,000 (which would raise over $1b in revenue); redirecting school bonus funding to universities for online education development and the commission of a report into GST reform.

3) Fast-tracking the development of fast rail, especially between regional centres and capital cities and eventually between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and support for underground public transport improvements.

In order to register with the AEC, the party – already with members in four states – is seeking 100 more foundation members and is seeking expressions of interest from potential candidates.

NOTES
1) The Lamington (cake) is undeniably Australian. It is named after a former Governor of Queensland: Baron Lamington. It was invented in Toowoomba, at the summer house of Lord Lamington, by a French-born chef Armand Gallad. It is believed that Gallad received a last minute request from Lady Lamington to prepare something for some unexpected guests. With limited ingredients available, Gallad experimented and created what has become an Australian icon. It is believed that Gallad was introduced to coconut by his Tahitian wife (where coconut was a common ingredient).
2) The Lamington Party is named after the Lamington. It was borne of Australian ingenuity. It is uniquely Australian. It was shaped by a number of cultures and the ability ‘to do more’ with what we have. These are qualities that define Australia and help inspire the Lamington party.

New Website to Streamline Recruitment Solutions for Businesses

Wednesday, 08 May 2013 16:31
A Melbourne company has launched an online recruitment solutions website that is set to revolutionise the hiring experience for businesses across all sectors.

The www.myshortlist.net website offers Australian employers user-friendly online recruitment tools to post ads across multiple leading job sites and social media, short list candidates, manage talent pools and access psychometric tests. The site will be launched on 6 May.

“Our mission is to empower employers to streamline the staff recruitment process and sidestep recruitment agencies so they can save time and money,” says Daniel Inglese, one of the managing directors.

“The harsh reality is that employers, particularly small to medium sized businesses, simply don\’t have the time or resources to spend hours sorting through hundreds of CVs after placing an ad.

“Whether it’s having to re-advertise positions, being inundated with unqualified applicants, interview no-shows or high turnover, finding the right person can be exhausting. When running your own business, the last thing you want to worry about is having to replace staff.

“My Shortlist is an innovative way to help businesses more efficiently recruit staff as the site gives businesses the tools that recruiters typically use to select candidates.”

The start up was created by Daniel and co-managing director Robert Bertucci. The pair saw a gap in the market after spending much of the past 15 years in recruiting roles within the notoriously high-turnover hospitality and retail industries.

One of the key features of My Shortlist is that it partners with major job sites such as SEEK and CareerOne and social media sites so that savings of up to 35 per cent can be passed on to employers.

“We have a unique niche in Australia as most other online sites within this field focus on providing services to recruiters rather than employers,” Daniel said.

“My Shortlist is an ideal and affordable tool to power employment for industries such as retail, real estate, tourism, trades, hospitality, B2Bs and offices.”

The Lamington party on dying with dignity, tackling gambling and making organ donation opt-out only

Thursday, 09 May 2013 15:18
The Lamington Party, a centre-left political party, today announced a series of initiatives that they hope will encourage public and political debate on important social issues. Jason McKenzie, the party’s founder, today noted, “We’re beholden to no big business or union, we’re beholden to our conscience and working with what we believe are common Australian traits of ingenuity, problem-solving and generosity to help address these important challenges.”

“In this spirit we have announced a number of initiatives today to enrich the public debate.”

These initiatives include:

1) Support for the terminally ill

McKenzie noted, “At least 80% of Australians believe that others should have the right to choose their time when the suffering is unstoppable or if the disease is terminal.”
“While legislating this issue at a State level is a step forward, we propose that this should be addressed at a Federal level to uniformly provide these rights to the terminally ill and equally as importantly, allowing them to be close to home, family and friends at that time.”

2) Making organ donation opt-out

“Last year there were 1080 people on the kidney transplant waiting list and only 237 donors. To help address this chronic shortage, the government introduced a payment to Living donors.”
“Our plan – similar to one being considered in the UK – will better address this challenge. We recommend a plan whereby everyone is automatically listed as a potential organ donor unless they choose not to be. This will save countless lives. It is practical and still honours the wishes of the individual. ”
“Apart from the clear social benefit, there is also an economic benefit. For example, in the case of kidney haemodialysis, the cost is over $50,000 a year per patient.”

3) Tackling gambling advertising and problem gambling

“This is incredibly important because up to 500,000 Australians are at risk of becoming problem gamblers and an activity that used to take place at a destination can now take place in your home via the internet at any time.”
According to the AMA President, Dr Steve Hambleton, “Young people, in particular, were at heightened risk of developing problems with gambling, and there needed to be a comprehensive and coordinated response from all levels of government to tackle the problem”. The AMA also noted there is been a rapid increase in problem gambling in young men. Given that for every problem gambler there are up to 10 people – family, friends, workmates and employers – who feel the effects, urgent attention must be given to this issue.^1

“The Lamington party proposes:
– Restricting gambling television advertisements to the “M” rating timeslots of 8.30pm to 5am each day with no exemptions
– Aligning pokie licensing with population changes and introducing a pokie licence ‘buy-back’ scheme
– And commissioning of a new report on problem online gambling with a focus on prevention.”

“The Lamington Party is dedicated to quality of life, equality, sustainability and innovation. We hope that these initiatives, along with others already announced will help encourage more robust debate and strengthen our society.”

ABOUT THE LAMINGTON PARTY
The Lamington Party, named after the uniquely Australian dessert, is focused on bringing Australia’s problem-solving skills, ingenuity and generosity to the fore. Lottie’s unique height of 18 cm has been based on the fact that fashion dolls have been on the market for over 50 years and were initially targeted at 10 to 12 year olds, with a doll height of 29 to 30 centimetres. In contrast, Lottie is measured to suit the height of the current average age of fashion doll users which is 6 years of age; meaning that she is ideally ‘clutchable’.

Lottie has lots of dressable fun, her clothes are bright vibrant colours and tactile fabrics. Using high quality saran nylon her hair is silky and less likely to knot.

Lottie designers based in the UK carried out 18 months research working with girls, parents, retailers, industry experts, child psychologists and child nutrition experts leading to the generation of over 100 action points which have been incorporated into Lottie’s development.

The 3 strongest points were:

  1. Girls being concerned by body image of a young age
  2. Girls being prematurely sexualised
  3. Girls missing out on their childhood

To address these Lottie has been based on the scientific proportions of a 9 year old child with the exception of her head. This has been increased slightly to accommodate hair play. She does not wear make-up, jewellery, high heels or tattoos.

Managing Director Heath May said , “Seeing such a fresh approach to design and play is so positive in a world of mixed messages” The range of Lottie Dolls can be found at David Jones, Kidstuff, Toys R Us, Toyworld and specialty toy stores.
